Celebrations are in order for Gateshead Council's Music Service after it hit all the top notes in a national assessment.
Teachers and pupils are now blowing their own trumpets following its success in the Self-Evaluation and Peer Moderation by the Federation of Music Services that rated music provision in Gateshead schools as 'outstanding'.
The result means Gateshead is now among the elite music services in the country - an accolade held by only a handful.
And it was music to the ears of the 90 schools that were included in the report- nine areas were assessed in total and resulted in six being rated as outstanding, and three others as good.
The 'outstanding' areas include: achievement and standards, support for pupils, personal development, leadership and management and overall effectiveness.
Now the service is dancing to a different tune having increased its rating from 'good' in 2001 by Ofsted.
Head of Gateshead Council's Music Service Manager John Treherne said: "We are absolutely delighted - it is a fantastic achievement for the service and for the pupils who benefit from our excellent teaching.
"Music has become a very popular subject in Gateshead; I remember when I started here 26 years ago there were 450 pupils across the borough studying music, now we have over 4,000!
"We also operate a music class or group virtually every day of the week for people of all ages and abilities."
The Music Service was awarded the prestigious Diploma of The National Music Council in 2003 in recognition of its vast and impressive service.
Among the music groups in the area are various junior and adult wind, string band, two swing bands and the Youth Orchestra.
Cabinet Member for culture Cllr Linda Green said: "This is excellent news and proves what we always knew - that the educational needs of pupils in Gateshead are our top priority.
"The fact that demand for music lessons has increased ten fold since the 1980s demonstrates the hard work of our teaching staff in promoting it and the subsequent and superb efforts of our pupils who take an active interest in it."
