A major boost to the region’s network of footpaths and bridleways could be just around the corner – but it relies on local residents suggesting where new routes should be created.
The five Tyne and Wear local authorities are currently working together on a county-wide Rights of Way Improvement Plan, which aims to deliver new footpaths and new bridleways for walkers, cyclists, horse riders and people with limited mobility.
But the plan can only work if members of the public submit their own ideas for new paths and trails in Tyne and Wear.
Kevin Vigars, the Access Development Officer for Tyne and Wear, said he hoped people would grasp the opportunity to make a real difference to the region’s network of off-road routes.
“The message is simple - tell us where you would most like to see improvements to routes in your area, or where new paths, bridleways or cycleways are most needed”, he says.
“Perhaps you have found somewhere you want to walk or cycle to, either for work or leisure, but currently cannot. Or simply a route to avoid busy roads, or improvements to an existing route. That is exactly the kind of information we need”.
“Some of our rights of way probably date from medieval times, but creating this plan will give us the chance, probably for the first time, to take a really close look at our paths and bridleways, and identify those which need upgrading or where new paths should be created.”
Section 60 of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 (CROW Act) asks local highway authorities to draft an improvement plan for their area based on suggestions by members of the public and other interested parties. All suggestions and comments received will be carefully considered.
The deadline for suggestions is 31st October 2006. The improvement plan will be produced in draft form for public consultation, and then published by November 2007.
