If you are still looking for that holiday novel, or you need some recipes for all those allotment vegetables, then get along to Gateshead’s Central Library quick – because it will shortly close to the public for 8 days!
The Central Library on Prince Consort Road, Gateshead is currently undergoing a major £2.6million refurbishment and is about to reach its final stage - requiring the temporary closure of the whole building.

So, on Monday 23rd August the library will close to the public – but only for 8 short days. When it re-opens on Tuesday 31st August, access will be via a new entrance from the car park as the historic main entrance will be out of use.

When it re-opens, the Central Library it will be operating a slightly reduced service whilst major refurbishment works are continuing. Fewer computers will be available and there will be more limited selection of books, DVDs and CDs.

However, computers will still be available at other locations in Central Gateshead including the Civic Centre, Explore Music at the Sage Gateshead and at Low Fell Library.

The refurbishment project, which has received funding from the Big Lottery Fund and from Gateshead Council, will eventually provide a brand new children’s library, café, young people’s space, gallery and a number of community rooms.

The new improved Central Library is scheduled to open this winter.
