St Josephs won the overall title but the health eating message was the real winner
A glitzy TV-style game show which has been touring Gateshead primary schools has held a final showdown between the highest scoring teams.
The quiz-style event, designed to help kids understand the healthy eating message in a fun, interactive way, has been enjoyed by almost 10,000 Gateshead kids over the past year.

The Fab Food Funhouse Roadshow is designed to educate young children on healthy eating and how to make the right choices on food and physical activity.

The final saw the two top scoring teams from around the borough - St Joseph's RC and Falla Park - square off to decided the 2008 title.

After a hard fought contest St Joseph's RC came out on top and were crowned winners by Gateshead Mayor Cllr Maureen Chapman.

The roadshow sets up in the school hall and uses a sound system and special effects to really engage with the pupils in a fun way.

Teams are chosen from the audience to compete in a healthy lifestyle challenge, which parodies some of the most popular TV game shows currently on air.

The show is designed to be an interactive treat for the youngsters, but also hammers home some important issues around healthy eating and childhood obesity.

Catherine Donovan, cabinet member for Children and Young People at Gateshead Council said:

"Well done to the children at St Joseph's RC school who won what was a really exciting final. Although this is a really fun event that all the children will enjoy, it also deals with some serious issues. The work really supports healthy eating and physical activity and it's vital that children make the right choices from an early age.

"This is all part of some very targeted work across Gateshead schools that is designed to help combat the wider problem of childhood obesity."

This year, the roadshow has visited 53 primary schools in Gateshead and is planning to go on tour again next year.

It has been so successful that the Gateshead organizers have been fielding enquiries from schools right across the country who are interested in the format.
