Carr Hill pupils Stephen Yates, front, and Kevin Pattison take to the high roads with their motley crew thanks to two new mini buses.
Children from Carr Hill Primary School will be taking to the road, after the school took delivery of two new minibuses.
The 17-seater minibuses will enable pupils to go on out-of-school visits and allow them to access clubs and activities around the area.
Purchased thanks to a £12k grant from the Department for Children, Schools and Families and additional money raised by the school, the minibuses have fulfilled a ten-year dream of Callum Kidd – Headteacher at Carr Hill.
Callum said: “Having our own minibuses is a great luxury and fairly unique for a primary school. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for ten-years as it will give us endless opportunities to enrich our curriculum.
“For example if a class is learning about rivers, we can now take them to see a river, without having to worry about the time and expense of booking an external coach company.
“It will also allow children who want to visit sports clubs around the area to do so.”
Other children in the surrounding area will also benefit, as the minibuses will be hired out to local Children’s Centres to raise income to cover running costs.
Councillor Catherine Donovan, Cabinet member for children and young people at Gateshead Council, said: “These minibuses are a wonderful asset for pupils at Carr Hill and the wider community.
“As well as improving the learning experience, it will provide opportunities to see places they might not otherwise visit.”
