Left to right: Portia Wallace, 6, Bradley Rogers, 8, and Stephen Wearmouth, 9, gear up for healthy eating week at Crookhill Primary School.
Some of the region’s biggest businesses have joined forces with Crookhill Primary School in Gateshead to help educate the children in healthy eating.
Well known names such as Warburton’s, Kelloggs, Maysan Foods Ponteland, Northumbrian Water, Polskie Food Co Ltd, Brocksbushes Farm and Blaydon Dairy are all taking part in a weeklong series of fun activities, to raise awareness of healthy foods.

Milky Monday kicks off the week, followed by Tasty Tuesday, World Food Wednesday, Thirsty Thursday and 5-fruit Friday.

During the week, children will learn about different food groups and will get the chance to try new foods every day, provided by local businesses.

They will also find out about food sources, when they get to pick their own fruit at Brocksbushes Farm. And the children will learn to cook healthy dishes with help from chef, Michael Bee, and Maysan Foods representatives.

As well as healthy eating education, the children will take part in lots of sporting activities such as skipping competitions, an aerobics session and school sports day.

Head teacher, Louise Easton, said: “We’re delighted that some of the region’s biggest brands have chosen to take part in our activity week. They’ve donated all the food to make the week possible so it’s great to have their support.

“We want to get the children talking and thinking about food so that they have an appreciation of healthy eating from an early age.

“This week’s fun activities will provide a great focus and hopefully help the children to develop a lifelong love of healthy food.”

Councillor Catherine Donovan, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “What children eat when they are young can affect their health for many years to come so it is essential to encourage good eating habits early.

“Crookhill’s activity week looks set to make the subject of healthy food interesting and fun – an approach which should benefit the children in the future.”
