Experts and traders in the field of family and local history will be on hand in Gateshead on Saturday May 17. The Local and Family History fair will provide a great first step for anyone who wants to know more about the history of their family or where they live as part of Gateshead Council’s Local History Month events.
The Local and Family History fair takes place at Gateshead Central Library and among the exhibitors will be Tyne & Wear Archives, Northumberland & Durham Family History Society, North East War Memorials project and Beamish Museum.
The history of various areas of Gateshead will also be given a high profile with groups dedicated to the history of their communities such as the Sunniside Local History Society. Apart from the opportunity to ask experts for advice there will be the chance to pick up bargain history related books.
Gateshead Council cabinet member for culture Cllr Linda Green said: “The town and people of Gateshead have a very distinguished history. Local History Month and the Local and Family History Fair in particular are a great way to help more people find out just how rich their heritage is.”
Over 80 separate events will be taking place right across Gateshead for Local History month 4 – 31 May, celebrating the rich heritage that Gateshead has from the industrial revolution to red kites.
The Local and Family History Fair is open from 9.30am to 12.30pm and entry is free. For more information visit
