As the old year draws to an end, we look forward to 2018 with a new sense of purpose as the council sets out itsideas and hopes for the future.

We’ve come to a turning point in how we run, manage and deliver our services; how we make decisions that are in the best interests of everyone – but especially those people who are most vulnerable and need our help the most.

So, we’ve developed a series of pledges for the Council that will be our touchstone for how we do things in the future. We want you to be part of this and help us make Gateshead a fairer place where everyone can thrive – find out how on page 8.

In February, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Angel of the North – a major milestone in the history of this iconic work of public art and are delighted to feature its creator Sir Antony Gormley on the front cover of the magazine.

We update you on what’s happening around the Great Exhibition of the North 2018, and urge anyone who would like to volunteer to support this amazing event to get in touch – details of how you can do this are on page 28.

In the centre of Council News we bring you your guide to a huge array of learning and skills courses that startin Spring; there’s an update of the Heworth roundabout roadworks as well as details of how you can ‘ditch the drink’ this January as part of Dry January.

Finally, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
