Welcome to the winter issue of Council News.
As we start to look at our budget proposals for the coming year, there’s no hiding from the fact that it’s going to be a difficult time for all of us, as we look to make up a shortfall in funding of £22million. As in previous years, this won’t be easy; we know we’ll have to focus on our priorities and change how we work as a Council and with our partners.
To help us, we need to know your views and our budget consultation runs until 6 January. Please let us know what you think about our proposals. It’s your Council, your services and your future. We set out the challenges we’re facing and how you can help us on pages 8-9.
We also bring you an update on the next phase of development of the former ‘Dunston Rocket’ site; and with new homes in the Trilogy 1 development in Saltwell almost all sold, we’ve the story of two new homeowners who’ve already taken up residence.
If your New Year resolution is to learn something new or get more creative, we’ve hundreds of learning and skillscourses on offer in our Spring directory.
All this plus a round-up of health news, what’s on in the borough, your winter guide to keeping safe and informed if the weather turns bad, plus all the news about what’s been going on in your local area – including that of six lucky young footballers heading off to Milan in March. Finally I would like to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
