Students from Cardinal Hume Catholic School celebrate their results

Results continue to improve

For the 12th year running, Gateshead's GCSE results have improved with more than seven in every ten pupils leaving school with five or more top grades.

The overall percentage of students gaining five A* to C is 76 per cent, an increase of six per cent on last year. Even more encouraging is the fact that the number of students achieving five A* to C including English and Maths has also improved to 46.2 per cent compared to 45.5 per cent last year.

Impressive

Cabinet member for children and young people, Councillor Catherine Donovan said: "Many of this year's results have exceeded expectations and demonstrate the fact that teachers and pupils alike continue to work to build upon their achievements across the board.

"Results for English and Maths have also been particularly impressive, thanks to effective and dedicated teaching, and committed pupils."
