Bins and recycling weather update

Latest update: Tuesday 6 March, 4.30pm

Waste and recycling collections have now resumed across Gateshead.

Refuse and recycling collections were severely disrupted by snow and icy conditions in most areas across the Borough last week. We were unable to collect bins on Wednesday 28 February, Thursday 1 and Friday 2 March.

Unfortunately due to the amount of missed collections across Gateshead and the weather forecast for the rest of the week we will not be able to return to collect any missed bins. If your bin has been missed, please take it back onto the property and we will collect this on your next scheduled collection date for that type of waste. You do not need to report a missed collection.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused but the decision was made due to safety and access reasons in this severe weather.

What to do for missed collections

Refuse collections

For collections missed due to bad weather, the revised collection dates are:

Green bin collections
Missed collection date Revised collection date
Tuesday 27 February  Tuesday 13 March
Wednesday 28 February  Wednesday 14 March
Thursday 1 March Thursday 15 March
Friday 2 March Friday 16 March

On these revised collection dates only, the policy of not collecting side waste will be relaxed. Please leave additional bags beside your bin.

Blue bin collections
Missed collection date  Revised collection date
Tuesday 27 February  Tuesday 13 March
Wednesday 28 February Wednesday 14 March
Thursday 1 March Thursday 15 March
Friday 2 March Friday 16 March

On these revised collection dates only,
the policy of not collecting additional recycling will be relaxed. If you have recycling that won’t fit in your bin, please leave it in a cardboard box beside the bin. Please only do this if the weather is dry as we can't recycle wet cardboard. Please do not place recycling in black bins and carrier bags as these will be assumed to be non-recyclable materials and will not be picked up to prevent contaminating the load.

Household waste recycling centres

Any excess recycling or waste can also be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centres which are working hard to stay open on scheduled opening days and times.
