Council Tax Support Scheme Survey

Your opportunity to give us your view on Gateshead Council's proposed
local Council Tax Support Scheme

CtaxSupportSchemeCentral Government are making changes to Council Tax benefits. Currently there is a national benefits scheme which sets out who can get help towards paying their Council Tax. From 2013 the Government is abolishing the current scheme and have instructed local councils to create a new local Council Tax Support scheme to give people on low incomes help towards their Council Tax.

We want to make sure that our scheme reflects the needs of our community and is as fair as possible. We are inviting all residents, (whether they claim Council Tax Benefit or not), as well as local organisations and groups, to give us their views by completing our survey by 14 November 2012 or attending one of our consultation events (small discussion groups).

The funding that we will get from the Government for our new local scheme will be significantly less than we got for the old national scheme. In Gateshead we will receive around £3 million less in 2013/14 compared to the amount we received this year. This means that there are difficult decisions to be made about who should receive this financial support and how much they will get.  If you would like to see how you may be affected by the proposed scheme, please use our Entitlement Calculator|. For examples of how households could be affected by the proposed scheme, please click here|.

The Government have decided that pensioners are protected from any changes and will not receive less support than they do at the moment. Support for pensioners will be calculated by using a national scheme set out by the Government, which is very similar to the current one. As pensioners are protected, the changes will only affect the working age population.
