Budget Consultation

We have concluded our consultation on plans to reshape council services to meet an estimated £92million funding gap over the next five years.

We now receive almost half the amount of government grant than we did in 2010, and this main grant is set to disappear completely by 2020.  We now have more demand for services and additional economic and financial pressures and this is on top of the huge £130million that we have already saved. 

Despite the difficult times ahead, we are committed to our ambition for Gateshead to be a great place, where people want to live, work, invest and visit.

All responses have been considered prior to Cabinet receiving the report on the Council's Budget and Council Tax Level 2017/18 (975Kb) at their meeting on 21 February 2017.

Leader of Gateshead Council Martin Gannon talks about the scale of the challenge the council is facing to set a balanced budget. Huge reductions in government funding, increasing costs, more demand for our services and increasing funding pressures means that in the future, the council must and will change.
