Understanding Gateshead

Civic centreGateshead

Gateshead is a constantly changing borough, which combines modern facilities with a fascinating heritage.  Set in the bustling area of Tyneside, the borough stretches almost 13 miles along the south bank of the River Tyne and covers 55 square miles, making it the largest of the five Tyne and Wear authorities.

Around half of the borough is rural but it also has a large urban centre.  There is a mix of urban areas such as Felling, Dunston and Blaydon, busy commercial and industrial areas such as Team Valley, and rural areas such as Ryton, Whickham and Derwent Valley.

Our Priorities

Vision 2030

Vision 2030 is Gateshead Strategic Partnership’s ambitious Sustainable Community Strategy. It is our statement of intent to make Gateshead a better place to live, work and visit....

“Local people realising their full potential, enjoying the best quality of life in a healthy, equal, safe, prosperous and sustainable Gateshead.”

Based on the views of over 10,000 local residents, businesses and other stakeholders, Vision 2030 identifies six Big Ideas for the future of Gateshead and sets out how partners will work together through a pathway of achievement to make these a reality.

Vision 2030 Six Big Ideas:

  • City of Gateshead - is about all the things that go with city status – it’s about Gateshead taking its place alongside other great cities in terms of design, growth, natural resources, people and culture. This also involves working closely with Newcastle City Council to jointly improve the economy of both Gateshead and Newcastle
  • Gateshead Goes Global - seeks to maximise the opportunities of globalisation for local benefit and reward and to recognise our role in the international community.
  • Creative Gateshead – is about investing in our heritage and our people. It’s about giving local people the chance to enjoy a variety of creative experiences and opportunities that improve their quality of life as well as the look and feel of the borough.
  • Sustainable Gateshead – is about making Gateshead more sustainable. This means looking at how we live, how we travel, use our resources and energy as well as how we ensure a sound economic future and an attractive local environment for Gateshead.
  • Active and Healthy Gateshead  - We want Gateshead to have one of the healthiest communities in the country with the building blocks in place to support and encourage people to take up opportunities to improve their health and lifestyle.
  • Gateshead Volunteers - is about involving more local people in their community in a way that benefits them and their community. We want Gateshead to be known as a national leader in promoting and supporting volunteering.

Gateshead Agreement

The Gateshead Agreement is our Local Area Agreement (LAA) which sets out the Gateshead Strategic Partnership’s three-year delivery plan for Vision 2030.  We review progress against the plan using performance measures and targets that are used to demonstrate improvements.  Any information on these pages relating to performance measures that are part of the Gateshead Agreement has been highlighted.

The Gateshead Agreement enables the Council and its partners to ensure that real progress is made in delivering improvement where it really matters for local people.
