Inspection of Youth Offending

Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Probation (HMIP) conducted a Core Case Inspection of youth offending work in Gateshead in September 2009 as part of the Inspection of Youth Offending programme.
The inspection judged how often the Public Protection and the Safeguarding aspects of youth offending work were done to a sufficiently high level of quality.

Judgements

  • Safeguarding aspects of the work were done well enough 51% of the time
  • Public Protection aspects of the work (to reduce each individual’s Risk of Harm to others) were done well enough 47% of the time
  • Work to make each individual less likely to reoffend was done well enough 52% of the time

The inspection found that substantial improvement was required in the immediate future in all 3 areas and made a number of recommendations.
The full inspection report| was published in December 2009 and is available from the HMIP website|

Our Response

In response to the inspection report, the Youth Crime Management Board (YCMB) commissioned a service review to address the issues highlighted in the report.  The improvement plan has now been agreed by the YJB and the YOT will be subject to a further inspection in January 2011.
