Councillor Pauline Dillon is the Mayor of Gateshead for 2017-18. Councillor Jill Green will be her Deputy Mayor.
Councillor Dillon has held the role of Deputy Mayor twice before, in 2009/10 and last year supporting Councillor Alison Ilderton-Thompson.
Elected as a councillor for Dunston and Teams since 2006 the Mayor moved to the Dunston area during the 1970’s. She worked as a Youth and Community worker and was a Magistrate before leaving this role to concentrate on council duties.
Gateshead has had a Mayor since 1835 when it became a borough council. The Mayor carries out many important ceremonial duties, presiding over full meetings of the council and representing the borough at civic functions in Gateshead and beyond.
During a typical year, the Mayor will attend around 300 functions, inside and outside the Borough. These can range from receiving a Royal visit or
foreign delegation to visiting primary schools, local community centres or a couple celebrating a diamond wedding anniversary.
Councillor Dillon has nominated The Young Women’s Outreach Project, The North East Young Dads & Lads Project, Teenage Cancer Trust and the Freemen Hospital Transplant Unit as her chosen charities.
