Recycling & Waste Disposal

The environmental nature of the project demands that measures are taken to lead by example. The Clean Tyne Project is very aware that much of the debris removed from the river is destined for landfill and as such, steps are being taken to dramatically reduce the annual figures of waste disposed in this way.

A giant stockpile of timber has urged the project to rethink the way it disposes of debris removed from the river. Now, the timber is transported to Broomfield Farm in Chopwell where a unique specialised shredding machine grinds and chips the wood to a pulp which is then composted and mixed with other environmental waste products to create a natural fertiliser to use on the farm.

Stuart Norman of the Clean Tyne Project was delighted with the reduction in waste going to landfill. "We are proud to say that almost 100% of our timber waste now goes for recycling," said Stuart. "When you also look at metal, tyres and the other waste that we collect from the river which we now recycle, it is clear that the project is very much a success and an example of recycling best practice."

Darren Willey from Broomfield Farm was pleased to be able to help the Clean Tyne Project. "Everyone's a winner," said Darren. "The river is cleaner, our farm benefits from natural fertiliser and our customers benefit from excellent tasting meat products reared in a very natural way."

The Clean Tyne Project has produced a Best Practice guide in collaboration with the Environment Agency, to provide guidance on waste management for riverside businesses. The aim is to make companies aware of the river debris problem and provide guidance on ways that businesses can reduce their environmental impact, especially with regard to storing waste near the River Tyne.
