The Gateshead breastfeeding friendly scheme was the idea of a local group of mothers from St Chads community project in Bensham, who wanted it to be easier to recognise places where mothers could breastfeed their baby while out and about.

To help you they have started a scheme to make lots of places in Gateshead "Breastfeeding Friendly"

Breastfeeding is vitally important to your baby's health and your own. It's important that you feel comfortable about feeding your baby while out. You may worry how people may react when feeding your baby in public, but you will find it easier to continue with breastfeeding if you make it part of your normal routine.

Mothers from local breastfeeding support groups will monitor places to make sure they are complying with the scheme.

If you are made to feel uncomfortable or asked to stop breastfeeding in a place with a breastfeeding friendly sticker, ask to speak to the manager or feed back your concerns to your breastfeeding support group.
