1. What accommodation is available for older people in Gateshead?

Community Based Services work alongside Gateshead Housing Company who maintain Council Sheltered Accommodation units Promoting  Independent Centres such as Eastwood, Tynedale and Southernwood and registered social landlords such as Housing 21 and Anchor.  We also run a Dementia Care resource centre called Shadon House.  We can also commission services from all of the Independent Sector residential and nursing homes.  Please contact Adult Social Care Direct on 0191 433 7033 to arrange a referral for assessment of your needs.

A number of factors determine whether you are sufficiently at risk in the Community and there are a range of options which need to be explored to best meet your needs.  To establish your needs we would complete an assessment.  To begin you will need to contact Adult Social Care Direct  |where some basic details will be taken and the duty officer will ring back and discuss the best way forward.

4. How can I ensure that I will receive a good standard of care within any residential or nursing establishment?

Where you have an Assessing Worker involved please contact them and share any concerns you have. If you were a Gateshead resident and are receiving financial support from Gateshead for a placement outside of the borough, you will need to speak to your Assessing worker or the local District Office|. If you fund yourself in a placement outside of the borough, you will need to speak to the local Social Services or to the Care Quality Commission|.

The Commission for Social Care Inspection provide free, independent reports on the quality of your local homes and care services to help you make an informed choice.

5. My relative lives in a residential care home and I have noticed a significant deterioration in their health, how can I get more help for them?

A reassessment of their needs must be undertaken.  In the first instance discuss your concerns with the manager of the home and ask for a referral to Community Based Service so that your relatives needs can be re-assessed to ensure their needs are met.
