Day Services for people suffering mental ill-health

Gateshead Council provides Day Services which provide a wide range of social, educational and recreational activities to meet the needs of people living in the community who have severe mental health problems.

Staff provide practical and emotional support and also work closely with other local groups and voluntary agencies in helping people to become more involved in community activities.

How can we Help?

If you, or someone you know, is experiencing mental health problems and needs support at certain times during the day, our mental health services may be able to offer this.

You will work with an identified member of staff, called a "Key Worker", who will help to organise activities and ensure that you receive the level of support that is required.

People referred to our services are encouraged and supported to take part in the day to day activities, consider new opportunities and continue to live safely in their homes. The rights, dignity and privacy of people who use our services are respected at all times.

Who are the Staff?

Staff are employed by Gateshead Council and are supervised by experienced managers. All staff receive regular training and development opportunities to increase their knowledge and improve their skills in mental health issues.

Out of Hours Service

Gateshead Council works in partnership with an independent organisation called Mental Health Matters who operate an "Out of Hours" service on certain evenings and weekends. Managers can inform you of the specific details.

How much does it Cost?

You will be financially assessed and there may be a charge for these services.

Eligibility Criteria

The focus of the service is for those people who:

  • have a severe mental health problem;
  • are aged between 18 and 64 years (Blaydon Centre also caters for 65+);
  • have been assessed as requiring support;

N.B. Priority will be given to those people subject to aftercare legislation.
