It was announced on 15th June that the government have suspended registration for the Vetting and Barring Scheme. Although new and existing employees will not have to be registered, the changes that were brought in to help facilitate the scheme will remain in place. The requirement to use the new system, forms and to collect additional data remain and the consolidated team will still deal with all the clearances. The changes brought in by the Vetting and Barring Scheme such as legal requirements, widened definition of regulated activity and the frequency test will remain. We will be updating the internet/intranet sites shortly. If you have any queries about the Vetting and Barring Scheme email generalenquiries_isa-crb@gateshead.gov.uk|
It is really business as usual for us as we are continuing with our preparations and just to be clear:

Checks such as the Criminal Record Bureau Check and the Independent Safeguarding Authority Registration are a requirement for people wishing to work, or who are already working with vulnerable groups and Gateshead Council is committed to the safety and wellbeing of the vulnerable groups in its care
Over 9000 employees and volunteers within Gateshead council have contact with children and vulnerable adults on a regular basis. Please see below for a guide to which posts and positions in Gateshead require a CRB check and or ISA registration.
The Independent Safeguarding Registration
This is a new scheme which starts in July 2010. All employees and volunteers who have contact with vulnerable groups on a frequent basis will need to be registered. It will be a criminal offence for an employee or volunteer to start working with children or vulnerable adults after 1st November 2010 without registration. The Safeguarding Support Team have introduced a new form that must be completed from 12th July 2010 to allow statutory checks to be carried out, called the Disclosure of Criminal Convictions Form which should be brought to interview along with the evidence of identity required.
