Being a parent is a really important job, and at times all parents (or carers) need some support in that role. The Parenting and Family Team offer a range of parenting programmes to meet universal, targeted and specialist needs of families in Gateshead. A short description of each of the programmes we offer can be found below.
Early Bird and Early Bird Plus
A programme for parents of 3-8 year olds who have been diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorders. A multi-professional team of health and education staff focus on understanding autism, developing communication and socialising, analysing behaviours and preventing problems.
High/Scope Caring Start Parenting Programme
For parents of pre-school children, this programme assists parents with forming partnerships with their children, encourages activities in the home, and supporting children’s active learning at home in preparation for school.
Let’s Talk Parenting (Challenging Behaviour in Adolescence)
A programme for parents of children aged 8-19. This programme aims to help parents understand their many roles and responsibilities, and the changing needs of children as they grow and develop, dealing specifically with challenging behaviour, adolescence and communication and negotiation.
Mellow Parenting
A programme for parents of 0-7 year olds. This programme is for families with complex relationship issues. The programme includes a home visit. Sessions include parents looking at their own personal issues, parent and children working together and parenting strategies.
Strengthening Families Parenting Programme
For parents of children aged 10-14. Sessions involve both parents and children, initially separately then joining for one hour for family session. The sessions focus on a number of issues including love and limits, goals and dreams, appreciating parents and family members, using consequences and peer pressure and substance misuse.
The Parent Factor in ADHD
For parents of children aged 3-19 who have a diagnosis of ADHD. Sessions include information on ADHD and how it can be treated, parenting styles, good communication, feelings and how they impact on behaviour and information on the education system.
Family Nurturing Programme
A programme for parents of children aged 0-19. This programme focuses on four building blocks including; self awareness and self esteem, appropriate expectations, empathy and positive discipline. Each parent is given a copy of the Parenting Puzzle workbook, which supports the programme. Sessions include; giving praise, discipline, rules, feelings, touch, child development and behaviours to ignore.
Triple P
A programme for parents of children aged up to 11 years. The programme aims to help parents improve their relationships with their children through setting boundaries and responding to misbehaviour immediately, positively and consistently. There are a number of Triple P courses that can be offered to parents which range from a one-off 20 minute consultation through to an 8 week intensive parenting programme.
Teen Triple P Programme
A programme for parents of children aged 12-16 years who are exhibiting or at risk of developing behavioural problems. The programme aims to develop effective management strategies for dealing with problem behaviour, focusing on teenager development and reducing problem behaviour.
