Services provided at the Centres
Gateshead Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children in need. Our Family Centres provide support to children and families who are assessed as needing help.
We believe that where possible children and young people should be brought up within their own families. So we help families to stay together by working closely with them at times of stress, providing training, support, and advice.
Family Centres can provide your family with a range of services including:
-
Assessment of parenting skills
-
Parent programmes with childcare support
-
Home support
-
Practical support and information
-
Play session for parents/carers and children
-
Children’s groups
-
Help to access community resources
Families can ask us directly for help and we also accept referrals from social workers, health visitors, GPs, voluntary organisations and children's centres.
Our staff will work with you to discuss and agree together what services best meet your family’s needs. We will review regularly the support your family receives to make sure it is the right help and is making a difference to your family.
Who the Centres are for
-
The Centres are a community resource open to all parents and carers for advice, help and support;
-
However, services are mainly aimed at those families who have particular needs and who are referred by their Health Visitor or Social Worker.
This does not mean that other families cannot use the Centre or take part in its activities - but places are limited and parents and carers should check with the Centre if they are able to attend.
Applying for a place
To apply for a place at the Centre you need to fill in a referral form - the staff at any of the Centres can help or you can ask your Health Visitor or Social Worker for help.
