The Licensing Act 2003

The Licensing Act 2003 repealed most of the existing legislation relating to alcohol, entertainment and late night refreshment and has replaced it with a completely new modern licensing regime. Responsibility for liquor licensing transfers from the Magistrates' Court to local authorities.

From the first appointed date of 7 February 2005 Gateshead Council will be responsible for licensing activities under the Licensing Act 2003. The Act requires that the Council carry out its various licensing functions so as to promote the following four licensing objectives:

  • the prevention of crime and disorder;
  • public safety;
  • the prevention of public nuisance;
  • the protection of children from harm.

We are in the process of drafting a new policy for 2011 to 2014 to see more information about participating in the consultation visit the Licensing Policy 2011-2014 consultation.|
