Fairtrade Borough status granted by the Fairtrade Foundation.

Application to Fairtrade Foundation for Fairtrade.

Borough status prepared and submitted.

Presentation to the Diversity Forum.

Gateshead Youth Assembly Standing Conference – A conference on fair trade was held in the Civic Centre, Gateshead and was attended by Tim Deveaux and David Swinton, Economic Development. The assembly has resolved to use Fairtrade products at all its meetings.

9 June 2006

Blaydon Kiddars Run – a Fairtrade goody bag sponsored by Gateshead Council, Pumphrey's, North East Co-op and Traidcraft was give to 300 children who completed the run.

May 2006

Schools handbook produced and circulated to all schools in the borough.

March 2006

Presentation to Café Eight as the first business to be recognised as supporting Fairtrade in Gateshead.

Launch of the Gateshead Fair Trade campaign.

First meeting of the Gateshead Fair Trade Steering group.

The Council declared its intent to become a Fairtrade Borough and set up a Fairtrade Partnership nominating a Lead Member (Champion) for Fairtrade and support members to the Partnership. This declaration supports fairtrade and the purchase of local produce allowing good connection with the community and partners and is an effective model for sustainable development and procurement.

July 2004

The North Eastern Purchasing Organisation Joint Committee agreed a Fair Trade policy. Gateshead is the lead authority for the organisation.

July 1998

Gateshead Council adopted the following policy on Fair Trade. The council:

  • welcomes Oxfam's Fair Trade Campaign;
  • applauds the practical support given to the campaign by Traidcraft plc, Pumphreys Coffee Limited and other Gateshead based organisations;
  • requests appropriate officers to consider the scope, within existing legal constraints, for purchasing Fair Trade products.
