Neighbourhood Planning in Gateshead

We want to help make Gateshead an even better place to live. Places where people want to live, work, learn and invest now and in the future. Drawing up a set of long term neighbourhood action plans will help us achieve this.

In some parts of Bridging NewcastleGateshead Pathfinder area demand for certain types of properties was low, leading to abandoned and empty properties. In addition the quality and choice in many cases remains poor and limited with an over supply of flats and terraced accommodation. Further issues affecting some areas include anti social behaviour and a growing private rented sector which requires support.

In 2005 we appointed consultants to help us develop plans for the following five areas:

The Council and consultants began carrying out research and talking to local people during Spring 2005. Over 4,000 people have now been involved and commented, including homeowners, landlords, housing associations, tenants, the Gateshead Housing Company, community groups and local business owners.

The results of this work were a series of options to help improve the five neighbourhoods. Options were exhibited at public drop-ins events in 2005.

The feedback from these sessions helped produce a set of Draft Neighbourhood Action Plans which were displayed at events in late 2005.

Recognising the individual character of areas and taking into consideration the opinions of local people a set of Preferred Neighbourhood Action Plans for each area were approved by the Council in 2006. You can view these plans by clicking on the links above. The plans will set out how the regeneration of your area will be achieved over the next 10 to 15 years and currently identifies:

  • Significant investment in the existing housing stock;
  • Demolition of a small amount of housing;
  • Building of modern family housing;
  • Environmental improvements;
  • New and improved open space;
  • Improved community and retail facilities;
  • Improved traffic management and parking;
  • Delivering services better tailored to the needs of people and neighbourhoods.
