Model of Multi-storey 3
Design - Gateshead Multi-storey

Design

The buildings modernist design made it special and way ahead of its time. It also made minimal use of steel and was made of grey brick and reinforced concrete. At the time it was hailed as a contemporary design classic.

The Owen Luder Partnership plans for the twelve storey building included:

  • Indoor market with many shops on two levels;
  • Many outdoor shops on two levels;
  • A pub;
  • Seven tiers of parking decks beginning at the fourth storey above the market;
  • A 5.500 sqft roof top restaurant accessed by a glazed 'bridge' and an open walkway;
  • There was also talk of a night club at the top of the building but this never happened.
