Parks and open spaces across the central neighbourhood have been transformed as part of regeneration plans for this area.
Avondale Park and Bewick Road Park have been fully refurbished while several pockets parks across Bensham and Saltwell have been improved.
The makeover of Avondale Park was so successful it even won a Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) North East award for regeneration.
