Clasper Village, near the Redheugh Bridge in Gateshead, is set to be replaced with new homes, public open space and possibly a small supermarket. The redevelopment is being planned after the majority of people living in Clasper Village told Gateshead Council that they thought that the estate didn’t fit their needs for the future.
Residents of the estate are currently being helped to move to other homes in Gateshead. The existing houses will be demolished in stages, likely to start in summer 2013.
Gateshead Council is looking to appoint a developer next year and feedback from local people will be used to help steer the formation of detailed plans. Those plans are expected to include a variety of new home types to cater for different needs, with a focus on families.
Two sites for a local supermarket are suggested, providing greater choice in order to attract a retail developer. Both are on Askew Road West, one being next to the medical centre and the other close to the roundabout.
