Renewable energy

We are supportive of green technology and the use of renewable energy.

We have an ambitious target to create a Sustainable Gateshead. This is set out within our Sustainable Community Strategy "Vision 2030".

Via our carbon management programme we seek to reduce our carbon emissions. We hope to do this by 35% over the next five years.

We expect renewable energy technologies to be part of any major development design process from the beginning. This comes as companies recognise their responsibilities and seek to follow planning policy.

We expect residential schemes to meet Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3. As well as expecting commercial schemes to meet BREAAM.

We encourage Gateshead residents to consider using renewable energy technologies. You can receive guidance from us on what does and does not need planning permission.
