Lesya Bourn's story

Live Gateshead Love Gateshead

Lesya, John and Thomas love the activities on offer at St Chad's Community Project
Lesya Bourn has lived in Bensham for five years and loves the parks and play facilities in her community.

"I love how close we are to Saltwell Park. And the work of St Chad's Community Project and Brighton Avenue Children's Centre," said Lesya.

"The park has lots of different areas and landscapes to enjoy: the lake, Saltwell Towers and feeding the squirrels in the rose garden. My children, John and Thomas, enjoy the play area but I think they'd like to see some new equipment there."

Lesya has seen many changes in her community and is hoping to benefit from the block improvement scheme in the next few years.

"We have seen some welcome changes in our neighbourhood, including the improvements to Avondale Park. But a lot still needs to be done and litter and fly-tipping are still problems", said Lesya.

So what are Lesya's hopes for the future of her community?

"I would like to see cleaner streets, more open spaces and more local shops - I really want to see local shops as part of the ongoing regeneration of the area.

"I would also like to see more parks revamped - including Hyde Park Street Park - so that they offer more seating and children's play facilities and aren't just for dog walking. Our parks need to be places where people can relax and children can play safely."
