Greg Walker's story

Live Gateshead Love Gateshead

Greg Walker lives in Bensham and thinks his neighbourhood is a cultural gem in the centre of Gateshead.

"Bensham is a very vibrant and multicultural area where, generally, everyone gets on well together", said Greg.

"It has great cultural and leisure facilities such as the Central Library, the Little Theatre, allotments, Saltwell Park, the Shipley Art Gallery and, when it reopens, the Gateshead Leisure Centre."

Although Greg feels anti-social behaviour is still a problem in his area, he thinks regeneration is bringing real change to his community.

"The regeneration of Saltwell Park has been very successful and the block improvement schemes look really good and seem to engender a greater sense of pride in the area. I'm looking forward to my home being transformed by the scheme in February 2010."

So what are Greg's hopes for the future of his community?

"I think the future of Bensham is all about a greater feeling of social cohesion - people getting on together no matter what their backgrounds and a more diverse mix of population.

"I have lived here for more than six years and, at the moment, would not want to live anywhere else."
