Council tax valuation bands

How much council tax you pay depends on your property's valuation band. Bands are set by the Valuation Office Agency based on how much the property was worth on 1 April 1991 – not its current value. Properties not built on 1 April 1991 are valued on what they would have been worth at this time.

Band appeals

If you think your banding may be wrong you can appeal to the Valuation Office Agency, if you are the owner or liable for paying the council tax.

Normally, you must appeal within 6 months of becoming liable. However, you must continue to pay while waiting for a decision on your appeal.
