Council Tax Appeals

Your right to appeal

If you have received a Council Tax bill which you disagree with you should let us know. You can appeal to us if you think that:

  • you should receive a discount or disablement relief or, your discount is not the right amount;
  • your property should be exempt from Council Tax;
  • you are not the person responsible for paying the Council Tax but we have sent you a Council Tax bill;
  • you disagree with the date shown on a completion notice.

You must still pay your Council Tax while you are appealing. You will be refunded any overpayment if your appeal is successful.

How to Appeal

If you disagree with the Councils decision not to award you any of the above then you must submit your appeal in writing to us.  You should give full details of why you are appealing (including any supporting evidence/documents)

We will look into your appeal within two months.

If after two months:

  • we reject your appeal;
  • we have not made a decision;

you can appeal in writing to a Valuation Tribunal|:

Appeals for the Gateshead area are dealt with by:

The Clerk
Northern Region Valuation Tribunals
Ground Floor
Block B
Southfield House
Southfield Way
Durham
DH1 5JY
Tel: 0191 384 8020

What happens at a valuation tribunal?

The tribunal will ask you to appeal in writing, stating which decision you disagree with and why, or that the Council did not respond.

They will contact you to arrange a hearing and send you a leaflet explaining what to expect. Hearings usually last up to half a day and are free unless you choose to employ a Solicitor to present your case.
